what is the cacfp?

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a program which provides federal reimbursement monies to Kansas child care facilities to provide nutritious meals and snacks for enrolled children in care.

Day care providers must keep menu and attendance records for meals served and must have an enrollment form signed by a parent on file with the sponsoring agency for each child. They are then reimbursed for up to 2 meals and 1 snack for each child each day. The program is designed to help pay for meals so that dollars spent for food do not come from the provider's or the parent's income, while the children are assured of nutritionally sound meals and snacks.

The CACFP program is administered in Kansas by the State Department of Education (KSDE) and funded by the United States Department of Agriculture. Approximately 4,600 child care homes participate in CACFP in Kansas. Homes must participate in the program through a sponsoring organization. All sponsors pay the same reimbursement rates for meals served to children and are subject to the same federal guidelines. However, sponsors may offer a variety of services and training opportunities for providers under their sponsorship.
